2011 Costume Ideas

Posted by Wendy Moyle on March 15, 2011

Whether you like to go classic, cutting edge or humorous for Halloween and costume parties, there is no shortage of options in Halloween costumes for 2011.

Go To the Movies
For the absolute latest trends in costumes, our advice is to go to the movies this year. New Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, XMen and Green Lantern films will be released in 2011, meaning lots of choices coming up in new costumes whether your character preference is Jack Sparrow or Voldemort. Shop Movie Costumes for some of the hottest movie and TV selections out there.

Play Favorites
Another way to go this year is a classic costume. Sci-fi and superhero characters fit this category, as do old- fashioned witches and monsters such as vampires and werewolves that are as fashionable as ever thanks to such TV fare as The Vampire Diaries and Being Human. From Spiderman to Darth Vader, Dracula to Wolfman, see Movie & TV as above, Witch Costumes and Horror Costumes.

Humor Us
If you like to walk into a room and hear laughter as others spot your costume, Create-a-Costume may be for you with its wacky wigs, glasses and other costume accessories. Put together an over-the-top 1970s “disco guy” with big wig and mustache, or a “biker” sporting a flame bandanna and tattoo sleeves. Or, pull on one of our hilarious sandwich board instant costumes (found in Men’s, Women’s or Teens’ pages).

Think Young
Look for older kids’ faves in durable, detailed Disney™ Costumes. Toy Story and Pirates of the Caribbean are still running strong as are girls’ Disney Channel characters from The Wizards of Waverly, Hannah Montana and Camp Rock.

In Infants & Toddlers, don’t miss the highly-rated Pinkalicious™ and UPS™ Guy costumes for the littlest trick-or-treaters.

Host a Costume Party to Remember

Posted by Wendy Moyle on July 31, 2007

Spitfire Cutie CostumeCostume parties might just be one of the best parts of Halloween. Whether you’re hosting a costume party or just attending one, ShindigZ has all the tips you’ll need for an awesome Halloween party.

Check out our other party tips for decorating your Halloween party for a funny Halloween bash or a scary Halloween party. Hosting a costume party is just like hosting any other Halloween party—you’ll need decorations, food, tableware, and other party essentials.

A costume party, however, has the added fun of a costume contest. Create a runway for costume contestants to display their duds using Halloween gossamer or spider web gossamer for drapes, curtains or a carpet. Have them enter through a doorway decorated with a Halloween curtain, or use an animated bone curtain for a special effect. It opens, lights up and plays scary noises when it senses motion! For a finishing touch, use a fog machine to fill the area with an eerie mist.

Have impartial judges decide who has the best overall costume, or divide the contest up into categories such as funniest costume, scariest costume, most unique costume, sexiest costume, cutest kids’ costume, or any other category you can think of. You could also have each guest cast a secret ballot into a cauldron and count the votes up—that way everyone is involved in the judging.

Hand out prizes to the winners when they’re announced. Try a sexiest costume sash or customize an imprinted sash for each category. You could also hand out Halloween favor packs to each winner or fill a black cat favor box with your own personally selected goodies. Our Costume Party Trophies are perfect. The set of three includes Funniest Costume, Scariest Costume and Best Costume trophies.

If you’re going to a costume party this Halloween, you’ll need a great costume!

Devil Dog Costume
If you’re going to the party as a couple or with a close friend, check out costumes for couples, such as a Plug and Socket Costume, or a Football Player and Cheerleader costume in which the man dresses as a cheerleader and the woman as the football player.

You can dress as a superhero (or a supervillain) with costumes including Spiderman, Wolverine, Superman, Batgirl, Padme Amidala and Darth Vader. Or, check out other movie inspired costumes such as Napoleon Dynamite, Stewie, Gandalf and Captain Jack Sparrow.
There are tons of costumes for teens too, including zombie costumes, sexy costumes, and Pirates of the Caribbean costumes.

Your can go to the party as a family too with family costumes. There’s even dog costumes for your pet—large or small.
